Impact Potential

  • Reduced Fossil Dependence

A broader shift to plant-based material alternatives could help reduce reliance on fossil-based inputs across commercial interior concepts.

  • Scalable Sustainability Impact

If adopted across larger hospitality networks, material choices could begin to create measurable sustainability effects at system level.

  • Circular Material Opportunity

Using plant-based residual streams as material input points toward a more circular approach to commercial sourcing and design.

  • Future-Facing Brand Environments

Material transition in hospitality could help create spaces that align operational reality more closely with evolving sustainability expectations.

Keyfacts

Challenge

McDonald’s décor sourcing programs require suppliers to meet defined commercial and program-specific expectations within a structured evaluation environment. For SUSMATA, the challenge was to position Wastea not just as an innovative material concept, but as a sourcing-relevant option capable of qualifying in formal hospitality procurement processes. This is supported by the repeated emphasis in the McDonald’s letters on supplier award, product catalogue inclusion, pricing and regional recommendation.

Solution

SUSMATA entered multiple McDonald’s sourcing programs with Wastea and positioned the material for real commercial and specification-based review. In Sunny Side Up, Wastea was awarded as a qualified supplier. In Vista and Classic Spectrum, it was selected as one of the awarded suppliers and approved as a Secondary Recommendation in the corresponding Product Catalogues.

Results

The result was a meaningful qualification step within McDonald’s décor sourcing framework. Wastea was recognized as a qualified supplier in Sunny Side Up and received Secondary Recommendation status in the Vista and Classic Spectrum Product Catalogues. For Vista, the recommendation covered Europe, LATAM and Middle East and Africa; for Classic Spectrum, it covered Europe and Middle East and Africa.
